Original Release Date: January 28, 2016
Review Date: June 28, 2018
Expiration Date: January 28, 2019

Description: Inappropriate, unsafe, or lack of transport when clinically indicated increases medical-legal risk to obstetricians and hospitals. Early identification of a perinatal patient (mother or fetus) requiring transport to a higher level of care improves outcomes. In 2015, ACOG & SMFM established and defined new maternal levels of care and outlined guidelines for maternal transport. This monograph applies the 2015 guidelines and their implications on maternal and/or fetal transport into an electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) case study format.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion, participants should be able to:
A. Apply 2015 ACOG & SMFM maternal levels of care into an EFM case study for early
identification of a mother and/or fetus requiring transport.
B. Define your facility's maternal and newborn levels of care designation as defined by the
2015 ACOG & SMFM guidelines and the 2012 AAP updates.
C. Use the 2015/2012 maternal-newborn levels of care to distinguish appropriate and safe
perinatal transports in clinical practice and include in policies, procedures, and protocols at
    your facility and/or office practice.
