Anesthesia Handoff Communications (1 hour Monograph)

Hours: 1.00

Target Audience: Practicing physicians, resident physicians and nurses in anesthesiology. Other interested healthcare practitioners are also welcome to participate.

Original Release Date: June 28, 2016
Review Date: December 28, 2018
Expiration Date: June 28, 2019

Description: Handoff communications in anesthesia care are prone to errors because these providers frequently transfer patient care. The daily process of information exchange increases the chances of adverse events due to errors in communication. There are currently no standardized checklist or mnemonics that are widely used for anesthesia handoffs. Therefore the handoffs in anesthesiology are very variable and can easily lead to errors, complications and even deaths. This CME module will define the parameters important for safe anesthesia handoffs. Anesthesiologists and CRNAs will understand the different checklists and mnemonics that can be implemented for effective handoff communications.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion, participants should be able to:
1) Define anesthesia handoff communication and its role in healthcare practice today
2) Evaluate the parameters, mnemonics and checklists available for effective anesthesia
